Iguana Lodge is surrounded by the Playa Platanares Wildlife Refuge. Established by a longtime family here on the Osa, the Francesci's have preserved hundreds of acres. We are able to hike though this refuge. Often people enjoy taking hikes through the refuge in the early morning or late afternoon, and this is also where we offer night hikes.
Three species of monkeys reside here, as do numerous other mammals such as kinkajous, anteaters, raccoons, coatamundis, etc. Part of the refuge is a mangrove estuary; hence reptiles are attracted to this area as well. There is a very large, make that very large, number of bizarre insects and a plethora of plant life. We can also arrange horseback rides through this refuge.
Meanwhile, you can hike back on the beach, which is absolutely sublime for strolling. You won't see another person, but you can't miss the scarlet macaws.
